From Memorization to Straight A+: Malaysian Student Uses Quranic Methods to Conquer SPM

A Malaysian student discovered that the discipline required to become a hafiz (Quran memorizer) was also the perfect formula for academic excellence.

ABNA24 - A Malaysian student discovered that the discipline required to become a hafiz (Quran memorizer) was also the perfect formula for academic excellence.

Leveraging Quran memorization practices while revising lessons proved to be the key to success for Muhammad Izz Darwisy Zawawi, 18, in achieving 12A+ in the 2025 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination.

The student from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Tok Bachok said the Quran memorization technique he practiced helped enhance his memory and made revision easier.

Having memorized the entire Quran since Form Three, he said he revised each subject every 10 days, similar to the method he used to master Quranic verses.

“Through this approach, I am able to recall what I have learned and understand each topic before moving on to a new one.

“I also frequently consult my subject teachers whenever I do not understand something, as I believe it is the most important step before memorizing,” he said when met by reporters at SMKA Tok Bachok Tuesday.

The second of four siblings said his mother, Mas Atikah Mansor, 48, had inspired him to stay focused on his studies, with her aspiration for him to become a doctor.

“My mother once aspired to become a doctor, but due to health issues following an accident, she had to abandon her plan to pursue studies in medicine and instead became a teacher.

“Today, I am grateful to be able to present this achievement to my mother,” he said.

He said he was also active in co-curricular activities, representing the school in chess, football and table tennis, and regarded his elder brother, Muhammad Izz Danial, 21, as his role model.

“My brother is currently pursuing studies in Syariah in Jordan and has also memorized the entire Quran.

“Since primary school, my brother has been quite strict with me regarding my studies. He also regularly checks my Quran recitation,” he said, adding that he intended to pursue medicine.
